Business Planning?

 

There are many good books on business planning, and some are even real estate specific.  You can also do some on-line sources for business planning.  But this article will cover why you, as an agent, should do business planning.

If you have never thought about business planning, you aren't alone.  The vast majority of real estate agents have never realized that they are a business inside their broker's business.  Sure they like the freedom being an Independent Contractor gives them, but they don't approach real estate sales as their own personal business.

But you have a choice.  You can treat real estate as your own business or you can treat it as a job.  

The difference?  

If real estate is your business, you are accountable for the results.  If real estate is a job, you can blame others.  That’s why so many people in real estate treat it as a job.  They don’t want to take the blame, but like to blame other things.  And if they aren’t making enough money, they can go to another company who promises them more!

But those who approach real estate as a business know that they can work for any company and still make money.  They select a company based on how much money they will net and for the office environment.  That’s why top producers are given private offices, offices with the best location, private phone lines, and other special benefits……to keep them from leaving.

If you’d like your career to be truly portable, you need to treat real estate as your own business and do your own business planning.   If you think that planning is only for managers, remember that you are not just in sales, you are in management and sales!
