Linking Strategies

Incoming links are important in getting leads from your website.  Here are some guidelines:

Your goal is to get links form related web sites that are ranked well by the search engines.  Unfortunately, there are many pitfalls along the way.  Doing it right takes time and shortcuts often become those pitfalls.

Search engines don’t like “link farms”.  These are long pages full of links.  You’ll often see many websites with the same links page.  That’s a bad sign.

Reciprocal linking (trading links) is not always bad, but has to be done careful so the search engines don’t see it as “trickery”.

Beware of exchanging links with trick you into believing that you are getting a good link back to you.  Some of these tricks are:

  1. The page your link is on is not close enough to the main page for the search engine to “spider” your link.  (NOTE: without the search engines crawling or "spidering" the link they will never know the link exists.)

  2. The page your link is on is not even linked to the main page, virtually prohibiting the search engines from “spidering” it.

  3. You link contains a html code (a no follow code) that actually tells the search engines not to “spider” your link.

  4. Yes, some sites really do this.  Some even do it after you pay for a link.

Don’t trade links with people who site has long links pages that may be considered “link farms”, especially if they are duplicate sites with the same links page.  And page with over 50 or more links might be considered a “link farm”. (continue #s)

Search engines don’t like it when all the links to your site read exactly the same, so add variety to your links.  If at all possible, make sure the link to your side is within text that is relevant to your site.

Links from niche directories are good. But not all real estate directories on-line are created equal.  Some of them use the trickery above to make you put a link to them while they give you a bad link.

Be careful how pages you are linked from are labeled. Avoid ones that call the page “reciprocal links” or “link partners”.  It will probably be OK if that is on a graphic and not in text.  But when viewing a site, it’s hard to tell the difference.

Also be careful who you link to.  If you link to a site that has been banned by a search engine, it could hurt you.  They should also be related.  If a site would be helpful to your visitors then the search engines should think it is a good link.

Don’t link to someone who puts your link on a dynamic page because it will never be spidered.  You recognize dynamic pages by their url.  If it has an “?” and/or a “=” in the url it is a dynamic page that only appears when it is asked for.
