Great Ideas for New and Newer Agents

How to select the company to work for, especially when you don’t know anything about real estate?

Whether you have just gotten your real estate license or thinking about a real estate career, it’s very important to make the correct initial steps.  If not, you will go the route of a large number of new licensees.  They get their licenses.  They struggle.  They sell a few houses.  They give up on their dream of a successful career in real estate and go on to something else.

How can you avoid making the same mistakes?

Select the right company. Talk to several different companies, large and small.  Ask questions.  But ask the right questions.  Here are some ideas of what to ask:

  1. Ask what they offer new agents.  Remember, high commission splits is not the only answer you want.  Neither is that they are the best company in town.

  2. You need to hear about their training program.

  3. Do they teach you how to build your business?

  4. Do they teach you how to work with buyers and sellers?

  5. Ask what percentage of the new licensees that start with their company stay in the business longer than 1 year?  …longer than 2 years?  …longer than 3 years?

  6. Ask to see their Policy and Procedure Manual and see what it says under Associate policies.  They will give you an idea of how they handle problems.

  7. Ask if the broker competes against them.  Ask if the broker has the time to help you with questions.

  8. Ask if they will help you developing your personal business plan.

Take the time to develop a personal business.  You are starting your own business, so treat it as a business.  Know what you need to do to get new business and how to do it.
Have a budget You need to spend money to promote your business, but you need to budget it properly.
Have a marketing plan Once you have a personal business plan and a budget, you’ll be ready to start on your marketing plan.  Find out what marketing works and what marketing does not work.  With that knowledge, your marketing plan and your budget, you will avoid making expensive marketing mistakes.

Have a technology plan  Technology is important in real estate today…and in the future.  But spending all your money on technology and not on marketing will not bring you business.  Here is the technology you will need to get started:
