If you are ready to get a web site, you need to know what you want to do with it BEFORE you purchase a template site or contract for a custom built site. Check out other sites to see how the site owners are using the site. Some of the uses you may find are:

After you decide what you want to do with your site, then you can consider the cost, the design and designers or template companies. The cost of your web site can go from minimal to very expensive. A custom designed web site can cost thousands. So can some of the template sites. Other template sites can be moderately priced or even free (for a very basic site).
You might consider contacting owners of site in other similar markets for feedback on how their site is performing for them. Do not ask for this from agents in your market area, as they may not want to help their competitors. Here are some of the things you might ask about:
Will you be able to work on your site to keep it from looking like everyone else?
Can you add your own custom content?
How easy is it to customize the site?
How well are you doing with search engines, and, if good, have you had to do extra search engine optimization?
How long have you had your site with this company?
How may leads are you getting per month?
How many sales are you getting per month?
Another alternative is to design your own web site. This only works if you have good computer skills and have the time to work on it. This is the method I use, because I wanted to have a custom designed web sites without the high cost. I’ve tried two different template sites without any success. Here are some of my sites:
